about

Sombor Summers is an arrangement of "U tom Somboru," a tune about the city/town of Sombor, where my mother grew up. It's an example of "starogradska muzika," or "old city music," a style of music popular in urban centers in the Balkans over the past couple centuries. I was lucky enough to learn this tune on the tamburica from Sombor native Zvonko Markovinović when visiting there many years ago. I am delighted that the tremolo on the 2xLSDJ Gameboys matches so well with the tremolo of the tamburica! Some electric violin adds some flavor as well.

This arrangement presents three iterations of the tune - slow, medium, and fast. The "slow" arrangement stays true to the traditional tune, and lacks percussion. The "medium" arrangement reinterprets the tune in a 7/8 meter, popular in other Balkan sub-genres. And the "fast" arrangement is all oompah oompah four-to-the-floor. The main melody is mixed with new original sections to keep things interesting.

This tune is dedicated to Zvonko Markovinović and to my mom, Nada Rakić!
